2022.01.28 19:08 Top-Organization-463 Day one

So I've wanted to quit for like 15 years, but I've always kept it hidden and then succumb to the shame cycle. I do it, feel ashamed, need an escape and then do it again. I've actively tried quitting now for the past 3 years with a few bouts of success. This is frustrating but there's one thing I've decided and that is that I won't quit trying to quit. I've got a bible study I do in the morning and a couple of accountability peeps irl. I started with the accountability last August and will keep that up. Will also post daily here on my successes and failures. Here's to Day 1!

2022.01.28 19:08 Every_Goat7690 L440 IPS screen icons retention

hello guys, recently I bought an IPS panel FHD of LG for my l440, it is amazing, as well as it goes down enormously the brightness also increases it a bestiality, I like colours, but notice that with the brightness to the full leave the disk manager (white color) and at the time of closing it is framed, I worry a lot, then lower the brightness and take a while to remove, this is normal?, there is some program that serves to adjust the burllo automatically to situations of screen color,as if it were a phone sensor that adjusts the brightness?
any recommendation is welcome

2022.01.28 19:08 tpcguts Old Ultraman series are worth a look for sci-fi fans

For those that are unfamiliar with it, Ultraman is a tokusatu genre in Japan. In other words, they are basically special effects films. People in the West might be familiar with movies like the Godzilla kaiju genre, and for TV, Power Rangers ( Super Sentai in Japan) and Kamen Rider.
However, due in part to a whole bunch of legal lawsuits over who owns international rights to the franchise, Ultraman has not been a big part of the media landscape in the 90s-2000s. That to me is a shame because they are some of the best sci-fi shows Japan have to offer.
The roots of the franchise lies in Ultra-Q. Which is basically the Japanese version of The Outer Limits, just with a bunch of kaiju mixed in.
What happened after Ultra-Q was that Eiji Tsuburaya ( who was the special effects supervisors for many of the early Godzilla films) decide to introduce a new show with an alien protector of mankind called Ultraman. But unlike other superhero shows like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, Ultraman still retains the sci-fi storytelling, just with a bit of kaiju fight in the end. The Science Patrol, a research/anti-kaiju combat team are sent around Japan to research weird stuff that has been happening and after revealing it is caused by the kaiju, they will fight with their VTOLs before Ultraman saves the day.
Think of it like the Japanese version of Doctor Who. Where instead of UNIT being helped by an Alien known as the Doctor, in Japan it is the attack team being helped by Ultraman.
The fact of the matter is that Ultraman is so popular when it first came out that it had a major influence on a number of Japanese creatives later on. Evangelion's director, Anno is a known fan of Ultraman that many of its influence can be seen in the EVA anime. He is even directing a live action reboot of Ultraman called Shin Ultraman, that is coming out this year in Japan.
If people finds the first generation of shows too dated in terms of special effects ( but if you are fine with old Godzilla movies, you're fine), I suggest they can look at the so-called Heisei era of Ultraman.
One of the height of the Ultraman franchise in recent times was the TDG trilogy. It is 3 50ish episodes of 3 titular Ultraman. Namely, Tiga, Dyna and Gaia.
Why do I recommend them to sci-fi fans? Because they are the best sci-fi coming out from Japan in the 90s and early 2000s. Its budget is comparable with some Western sci-fi shows ( the cheaper ones), but it was impressive by Japanese tv standards. Yes, it uses a number of dated CGI, but the CGI was impressive for a Japanese TV show in the 90s.
The best place to start is perhaps Ultraman Tiga. The core of its story is about mankind starting to advance towards a new age of science and prosperity, but a time capsule that was enclosed in an asteroid had came back with some dark warnings for humanity. Firstly there was another race of humanity that existed 30 million years into the past, and while they had the protection of Ultraman Tiga and his compatriots, it was ultimately not enough to forestall the destruction of the 1st ancient Human civilisation. Now the cycle of death and destruction is going to repeat itself and humanity needs to seek a way to revive Ultraman Tiga to deal with the modern threats and ancient threats coming back.
However, the series is largely episodic in nature with some episodes hinting the end of all things. But what that allows is different writers to tell a whole bunch of sci-fi stories in as "mini-movies"
The series drew a lot of many Western sci stories as well.
Notable episodes are :
The pilot and the second episode to get a good idea of the set-up
Episode 3 will feature a recurring alien race that deem they should be the protectors of humanity and not Tiga
Ep 4. About what happens when mankind space expedition got captured by aliens energy and ended up as a kaiju

  1. Mankind is trying to have first contact with a lifeform known as critters that lives in the upper hemisphere. Soon mankind will learn extending an arm in friendship have different meanings in the minds of another alien race.
7, A first contact was made with an alien refugee ship, but the ship had supposedly lost all control and is about to ram the human space base. The officer on the base had to deicide if he should blow up the ship.
  1. A friend of one of the attack team member have been suffering from declining health in a way. But as attack team member investigate, he realised that his friends' research in genetics might be too dangerous.
19 and 20. Two parter. A new engine designed for humans to explore space is undergoing test. Soon travel within the solar system would be made possible at decent time travelling time. But an alien robot species out to destroy the project once any civilisation had reached that level of advancement. Humanity's hope and dreams of expanding into space may be curtailed.
Ep 22. AKA Steven King's The fog. It is almost literally the same story in many ways. if you like Steven King, this is basically his episode in Ultrman.
Ep. 25. The return of a familiar threat. This time, its messages seems to have an impact on brainwashing large swats of humanity, including the family members of the attack team. Can Tiga fight along?
Ep 28. With the numbers of kaiju increasing, the team wanted to embark on a large scale anti-kaiju operation. Think a Godzilla movies with tanks, planes and all sorts of weapons trying to go up against a kaiju. There is starting to have a lot of questions of whether humanity is being drawn into a neverending arm race against the kaijus.
Ep 29. A famous J-Pop singer is suspected to be an alien. One of the attack team member had his body taken over by the brother of that singer. They were refugees escaping genocide. The J-Pop singer girl was small alien girl taking over of a recently deceased girl at a car accident. Now the brother wants to take her home. Unbeknownst to them, the alien race that was still chasing after them wanting to total and clean genocide of everyone from that race.
Ep 31. An alien species began multiplying at the attack team base, evolving and multiplying at a rapid rate using the energy of the base. The attack team must find a wave to defeat this creature before it takes over the planet.
Ep 32. Zelda Point's Defenses. One of the best episode in my opinion. The attack team is severely injured while trying to defend a defunct military site. Turns out it contains a very dangerous substance that was once considered an energy source. The creator of that substance is spending his life paying for penance for what he invented and what it took from him. Truly an emotional episode imo.
Ep 34. The top leadership of the world's government leaders have disappeared while on a major international conference, including the leader of UN's successor organisation the TPC. Suddenly they are declaring the island they were on an independent state and sough to demand the rest of the world to bow to them.
Ep 36:: A kaiju appears of manipulating space-time appears, including one Japanese schoolgirl from the prewar era. the team has to deal with a girl lost in time while fighting this new kaiju.
Ep 43-44 : Turns out someone is also trying to become an Ultraman. What does it mean for man to gain such powers?
Ep 45: Another top episode. What would humanity do when a flower booming is enough to send them into pure bliss. As the prophecy about the second destruction of mankind draws near, and it told about how this very flower played a part in the destruction of anicient humanity, can humans resist the temptation of accepting being wiped out while being in complete bliss?
Ep 50. The herald of the ancient dark master have arrived. Its spped is unrrivalled with nearly nothing can catch up to this new kaiju. What is the cost invovled to defeat this kaiju>
Ep 51-52 The daughter of Gatanothor awakes as the master of darkness. Its sheer presence send most of the world into despair and its lieutenants destroyed nearly every force sent against it. Questions are being asked if even Ultraman Tiga can defeat such a monster. Can human avoid a repeat of the past?

This is just a write-up on the episodes in Tiga that I think dealt more with science fiction and are decent to great. Like the outer-limits, it is more important to think in terms of themes rather than character arc or growth. The true protagonists of the series are humanity itself and how we react to both advancement in science, but also how one can face the notion of a cycle repeating itself.
This Tiga show won the Seinen award, which is basically Japanese' version of the Saturn award for good sci-fiction storytelling. Ultraman is basically life-action scifi rather than anime sci-fi that we see so often.
The official company releases both new series and old series on their channel. But they seem to have a policy of making their older Ultraman series easily accessible for most people to help them get into the franchise.

Dyna is a sequel to Tiga, and take the whole new age of humanity even further. It is a story about mankind's attempt at colonising our solar system ( something that has not been common in most live action scifi), and the trials and tribulations they will face. I'll post more episode recommended list if there is interest.

Gaia, the last of them, was a series that tries to explore what if Earth itself manifest in form of this Ultraman. This series takes place on another new Earth and tells a story of a super-genius and a massive international organisation that tries to stop the threats of kaiju. It has a massive cast, but cool characters and also a lot of science-fiction driven stories. I will post a list of recommnedation if anyone wants it.

That said, I am happy to talk about the Ultraman franchise with people who want to see more about Japanese life-action sci-fi shows.

2022.01.28 19:08 jesseMARS To ask, or not to ask? That is the question.

My sister and some friends (guys and girls) are going to prom as a group, and they’re dragging me along with them. I have a very limited social battery, so this is rather intimidating. I’m being pressured by my brother and a few other friends to ask one of the girls in the group to go to prom with me, but I feel like that would be kind of weird since I’m already technically going with her, just with a bunch of other people as well. Is it weird to ask her out when we’re part of a group? This is a desperate situation. (For age context, I’m a 17 year old guy) (For social skills context, I’ve always been single)
